Add your VAT number or tax ID

Add, change or remove your VAT number or tax ID from the Billing details card on the Payments page, and get invoices with your company details.

Updated 2026-10-063 min read

Add your VAT number or tax ID on the Payments page, and your payments come with an invoice that shows your company details, as well as the receipt.

Where to find it

Open Settings → Payments. The Billing details card shows your billing name, email and address, and your tax ID.

Only the account owner sees this card. Invited team members don't see billing at all.

Add, change or remove your tax ID

Each account has one tax ID.

  • With no tax ID on file, click Add tax ID, pick the Type, and enter your number.
  • With a tax ID on file, click Change to replace it, or Remove to take it off.

Remove asks first (Remove tax ID?). From your next payment, you get a receipt only, without company details.

If the number doesn't match the format of the type you picked, the field rejects it with "This number doesn't match the format of the selected tax ID type." Any tax ID already on file stays as it is.

Which type to pick

The Type list is searchable (Search by country or ID name) and has a Show all countries option. The types it offers follow your billing address:

  • An EU country (Bulgaria included): only that country's EU VAT number.
  • Any other country: that country's tax ID types, for example a United Kingdom VAT number, a United States EIN, or an Australian ABN.

Businesses in Northern Ireland use the Northern Ireland VAT number (XI).

Invoice or receipt

  • No tax ID: each payment gets a receipt.
  • With a tax ID: each payment gets an invoice with your company details, as well as the receipt. The one exception is an EU VAT number that is Not verified (see below).

You'll find both under Receipts & Invoices on the Payments page.

Checking your number

Some tax ID types are checked after you add them:

  • EU VAT numbers, with the EU's VIES system.
  • United Kingdom VAT numbers and Australian ABNs, with their tax authorities.

Other types aren't checked, and no status shows for them. For the checked types, the card shows one of these statuses:

  • Being checked: "This can take a few minutes. You don't need to stay on this page." The card updates on its own.
  • Verified: the number was confirmed.
  • Not verified, on an EU VAT number: "Until you fix it, payments include VAT and get a receipt instead of an invoice." If the number is wrong, use Change to correct it.
  • Not verified, on other types: "The tax authority couldn't confirm this number. Your invoices still show it."

When changes apply

Changes apply from your next payment. Receipts and invoices already issued don't change.

Your billing name and address

The card shows your billing name and address, but you don't edit them there. Click Edit name or address to open the Stripe billing portal and update them.

After your trial ends

The Your Trial Has Ended screen has an Edit billing details link that opens the same editor. Once a tax ID is on file, resubscribing doesn't ask for it again, so use this link to change it.

If an invoice is unpaid

An unpaid invoice, shown on the Payment Issue screen, keeps the details it was issued with, and you can't change them there. Pay it first, then change your tax ID on the Payments page. The change applies from your next payment.

Fix a past invoice

For a correction to an invoice that was already issued, email [email protected].
